Lafayette - James Richard McNally, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, teacher, coach, and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at his home. He was 89 years old. James was an active and dedicated member of St. Pius Catholic Church, where he found joy in studying the Bible and strengthening his relationship with God. His deep faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he shared it with all those around him. James was also an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, often spending time off his pier on his lake in Alabama, where he found peace and connection with nature. A proud alumnus of both Mississippi State University and McNeese State University, James’s passion for teaching and coaching was evident in his lifelong career at John Carroll High School in Alabama. For many years, he mentored and shaped young minds, earning the respect of both students and colleagues alike. His most celebrated achievement came in 1973 when he led the John Carroll High School football team to a State Championship title—a testament to his leadership and dedication to the young athletes he guided. James was born to Berry McNally and Elizabeth Payne, who preceded him in death, along with his son, James Richard McNally Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Bridget Russell and her husband, Jeff Heinisch; Patricia McNally; and Mary Graham and her husband, Ricky. He also leaves behind his sister, Cathy Rafuse and her husband, Cal, as well as ten cherished grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of great joy and pride for Jim. The family would like to give Special Thanks to Hospice of Acadiana especially Candace Lege and Shae Green for their constant support and care giving. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 1:00PM at Sacred Heart Church in Cullman, Alabama. The Very Reverend Patrick Egan will officiate the Mass and inurnment, celebrating Jim’s life of faith, love, and service to others. James McNally’s legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and countless students whose lives he touched. His unwavering faith, commitment to his family, and love of teaching will be remembered by all who knew him. May he rest in peace, reunited with those who have gone before him, in the presence of the Lord.
