Coteau – Joel Joseph Guilbeau age 89. With heavy hearts and profound sadness, the family announces his peaceful passing on Sunday, September 8, 2024, in New Iberia, Louisiana. A memorial Mass will be held in his honor on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church at 10:30 AM, where Father Matthew Hebert will officiate. Joel's family and friends will gather to celebrate his remarkable life and bid him a fond farewell with The Men’s Group leading a Rosary at 9:45AM. Joel proudly served in the U.S. Army and had a diverse career spanning several industries. He began his professional journey as a waiter at Brennan’s in New Orleans before working for the Donald Palmer Bag Company. His career also included time in the oilfields and culminated with his role as an elevator constructor with the International Union of Elevator Constructors. Joel's enthusiasm and dedication were evident in every role he undertook. Known for his infectious spirit and jovial nature, Joel never met a stranger and was often the life of the party, regaling friends and family with his humor and stories. He was an avid fixer of things, enjoyed cooking, loved to fish, and delighted in flying his kite. His beloved pet dog, Sugar, was a cherished companion throughout his life. Joel is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Deanna Romero Guilbeau; his three sons, Scott (Angie), Dana, and Cory (Lottie) Guilbeau; and his five grandchildren, Logan (Amber) and Luke Guilbeau, Emily Jorgensen (Joel), Mallory Dooley (Briston), and Katti Domingue (Charlie). He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren: Amelia, Cameron, and Julia Guilbeau; Mila Jorgensen; Slade Dooley; Jaxten and Alora Richard; and Aubrey, Cohen, Baylin, Zuri, and Patsy Domingue. Joel is remembered fondly by his siblings Elaine Cuccio, Julia Gachassin, Sandra “Poochie” Richard (Mac), Lazaire (Kathy), Willard (Linda) Guilbeau, Gordy “Pete” (Gwen), and Gary “Bupsy” Guilbeau. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Jerry Latiolais and David ‘Wayne’ Romero, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordy and Beulah Dubois Guilbeau; two brothers, Carroll and Ivan Guilbeau; a sister, Merlene Latiolais; three brothers-in-law, Lou Cuccio, Louis Gachassin, and Dickie Romero; three sisters-in-law, Delores, Barbara “Bobbie,” and Beatrice Guilbeau; and his in-laws A.D. and Oceana LeBlanc Romero. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Seth, Marci, and all the nurses and staff with Hospice of Acadiana; Jennifer, Katina, Lana, and the office staff of Home Instead; the Veterans Administration; and his RN Kavin Moore for their compassionate care. Rest easy and fly high, our beloved Joel. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
