Karen Jean Gibson passed away peacefully at her home on February 23, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Wisconsin, Karen made Louisiana her home in 1983, where she built a beautiful life filled with family, friendship, laughter, and love. Known affectionately as “Granny Karen,” she was cherished for her sharp wit, warm spirit, and her huge heart. She had a way of lighting up a room with her humor and honesty, and her love for her family knew no bounds. As her family lovingly says, there are no wheelchairs necessary in Heaven.
Karen leaves behind to treasure her memory her son, Eric Kunzler and his wife Candy; her daughters, Ginger Fontenot and Barbara Jean Benoit and her husband Lance; her brothers, Jerry Sommer, Joe Bishop, and David Bishop; and her beloved grandchildren, Michael Kunzler, Nicholas Kunzler, Hailey Kunzler, Bennett Paul Fontenot Jr., Evan Benoit, and Grant Benoit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Barbara Sommer, and her brothers, Dan Bishop, Ron Bishop, Jeff Bishop, and Greg Bishop.
A Memorial Service will be held on March 29, 2026, at Northside Assembly of God Church at 2:15 p.m., with visitation from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Karen’s memory.
Granny Karen’s love, laughter, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
