LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA – Melanie A. Meche, age 79, passed away on August 19 at Cornerstone at the Ranch Bethany Rehabilitation Center in Lafayette, Louisiana.

A lifelong resident of Lafayette, Melanie devoted her life to educating and uplifting young people throughout the community and beyond. She spent many years leading the Delta School of Business as Dean before naturally transitioning to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she worked for decades guiding students through their studies and their life journeys. Her influence shaped countless lives, leaving a legacy of strength, encouragement, and opportunity.

To me—her son—Melanie embodied a rare and beautiful balance of toughness and unconditional love. She had a gift for bringing out the best in others, pushing them to persevere while offering the kind of nurturing reassurance that made you believe everything would be alright. Her hugs were legendary, her faith unwavering, and her love for her family immeasurable. She adored the Lord, cherished her children and grandchildren, treasured her friends, and held a deep and abiding love for my father, Nathan.

Her happiest places were the beaches of Ft. Walton Beach and Destin, Florida—and, as everyone knows, Disney World, which brought her pure joy.

Melanie is survived by her two children: • Stuart J. Meche and his wife JaAn Scofield‑Meche, along with their daughter Chloe G. Meche • Shelly R. Meche Richard, with daughters Gina F. Vincent and Camille C. Vincent, son Austin C. Richard (“A.C.”), and stepson Brodie D. Richard

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis Anderson and Angie Smith Anderson, and her brother John A. Anderson (“Bo”).

Melanie will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. We love her dearly and will forever cherish the time we shared. Her final resting place will be beside her beloved husband, Nathan Meche, at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Grand Coteau, Louisiana.
