Rita Marie Matthews

Rita Matthews, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Born in Oregon in 1952 to Doug and Alice, Rita lived a life defined by generosity, humor, and unwavering love for her family and community.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Nancy and Lora; and her son, Eric Christopher, whom she lost at a young age. She is survived by her children Tanya “Michelle” and Steve; her unofficially adopted daughter Naomi; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply. Rita also leaves behind her brother Terry and his wife Beverly, and her sister Donna of Oregon.

Rita spent many years in Colorado before relocating to Louisiana 11 years ago to be closer to Terry and Beverly. Her career as a bus aide and later a driver for special-needs children in Firestone, CO and Breaux Bridge, LA was more than a job — it was a calling. She treated every child as her own, often bringing treats and gifts, and going out of her way to ensure their safety and comfort. Her heart was always bigger than the rules.

Creative and bold, Rita enjoyed cross-stitching, tole painting, water skiing, and riding motorcycles with her husband Stan and their friends. She had a lifelong love for Halloween and scary movies, and her playful spirit brought joy to everyone around her.

Rita’s home was a refuge for anyone in need. Whether it was a friend of her children or someone who simply needed a place to stay, her door and heart were always open.

Above all, Rita’s greatest devotion was to her husband Stan, with whom she shared a quiet, enduring love that inspired everyone who knew them.

Rita’s legacy lives on in the lives she touched — through her family, her work, her laughter, and her boundless compassion. She will be remembered with smiles, tears, and deep gratitude for the life she lived and the love she gave.
