Shirley Sue Hill

July 12, 1929 — March 9, 2022

Sue Hill Sue Hill, born Shirley Sue Anderson, passed from this life on March 9, 2022 at Camelot Assisted Living in Broussard, Louisiana. She was 92. Sue, as she was known to everyone, was born July 12, 1929 in Abilene, Texas, to Loyce Douglas Anderson and Dovie Edna Collenback Anderson. After her early schooling in Texas, she moved with her family to the Hammond, Louisiana area where she graduated from high school at age 16. The summer after she graduated, she enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana College. Many of her classmates were combat veterans, much older than she was. One of her classmates was a young man from New Orleans, fresh out of the Merchant Marine, Walter Hill. They met in a college production of the play “Saint Joan”, began dating, and were married in 1949, the same year that she graduated from Southeastern with Honors. Walter was the one true love of her life and she was devoted to him. They were married for 65 years until Walter’s death in 2014. Sue was active in local affairs, serving as a PTA President and as a member of several local organizations, including serving as the President of the East Baton Rouge Parish March of Dimes for several years. In 1968, she was elected President of the Southeastern Louisiana College (now University) Alumni Association. In 1965 Sue began working as a school librarian at St. Amant Elementary school. She was innovative and began to integrate a new tool, computers, into her library. This soon became a parish-wide initiative which Sue led. Not being satisfied with her ability to adapt to new technology, Sue entered graduate school in the LSU School of Library Science and was duly awarded her Masters of Library Science degree from LSU. Her school library was recognized for statewide excellence in 1981 by the Louisiana Library Association; she served as president of the Louisiana Library Association in 1983-84. After her term as president, she continued her service to the Association by serving as its archivist for many years. Sue loved the outdoors and after she and Walter retired, they made many camping trips throughout the United States and Canada. They cruised the Caribbean and traversed the Panama Canal. Later in life, she was able to fulfill the long-held dream of travel through Scotland, Ireland and England. Throughout her life, Sue always seemed to have a book nearby, and it was only LSU sports that could get her nose out of her latest historical romance. Sue is survived by her son Mike and his wife Brenda of Lafayette; her son Steve and his wife Anita of Pineville; grandson Brian and his partner Jamie; grandson Darren; grandson Adam and his wife Krystal; granddaughter Jennifer Arnold and her husband Jonathan; and her great-grandson Avery. The family is very grateful for the kind and considerate care provided to Sue by the nurses and personal attendants of Camelot Assisted Living in Broussard, Louisiana over the last four years. Finally, the family extends a warm “thank you” to the staff of Bridgeway Hospice for all of their help and particularly to Ashlea for her understanding and help in the most difficult of times. Funeral arrangements are pending. Donations in Sue’s name to the Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association would be appreciated.
